Skylar Thompson, a former quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, his agency said Tuesday. Thompson became a free agent after the Dolphins declined to re-sign him at the end of the season.
Thompson was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but injuries forced him into the Dolphins’ starting lineup far sooner than expected. However, Thompson suffered injuries and struggled during his playing time.
In 138 career attempts, he has completed 58.7 percent of his throws, thrown one touchdown, and thrown four interceptions. Thomspon has added 25 rushing yards to his career total of 721 passing yards.
Tua Tagovailoa’s backup at first this season was Thompson. He was hurt, though, and the club had to rely on Tyler Snoop Huntley as a backup. Thompson was cut and placed on the practice squad, and Huntley would fill in as the backup for the remainder of the season.
Prior to entering the NFL Draft, Thompson was a standout player at Kansas State. He participated in 45 games during his five seasons there, rushing for more than 1000 yards over his four seasons with the team and amassing 7124 throwing yards and 42 touchdowns.
Going into 2025, the 6-foot-1, 217-pound quarterback will be the lone quarterback with a contract with the Steelers, where he hopes to start over in the NFL.
