According to authorities, a student pilot and an instructor both escaped a jet crash at a North Jersey airfield on Sunday without suffering any injuries.

According to a news release from the Fairfield Police Department, the Piper Seminole P-44 touched down on the runway of Essex County Airport in Fairfield without its landing gear deployed. At 2:21 p.m., officers received a 911 call reporting the incident.

The only passengers aboard the aircraft were the student pilot, a 32-year-old male from Elizabeth, and the instructor, a 31-year-old man from Paterson. The airport’s Air Fleet Training Systems is the owner of the aircraft.

Police spokeswoman Officer Stacy Chiarolanza stated, “These gentlemen are very lucky because the circumstances surrounding this crash could have been much worse.”

Following the crash, the airport was closed to allow the FAA to conduct an investigation.
