Following the Steelers’ defeat by the Baltimore Ravens, head coach Mike Tomlin added his name to a list of coaches that no one wants to work for. He has now lost six straight postseason games, which is the longest active drought in Tomlin’s tenure and a Steelers franchise record. In 2017, he last won a playoff game.
As a result, Tomlin became one of only four coaches in NFL history to have lost six or more consecutive postseason games. The only other coaches to do so are Shane Owen, Jim Mora, Marvin Lewis, and Marty Schottenheimer. Lewis’s seven consecutive postseason losses set a new record.
The answer is straightforward: Tomlin won’t be in Pittsburgh for very long if he can’t improve his postseason performance. Even with the Steelers, patience is wearing thin after so many losses, and even if Tomlin has changed, the same script is being followed year after year. He will return for the upcoming season, though.
They will unavoidably make significant personnel changes this offseason in order to address their playoff difficulties as soon as possible. But unless Tomlin is prepared to alter his coaching approach, nothing will change.
