The PGA Tour is still in Hawaii for its second Tour event of the 2025 season, despite the fact that snow is covering the ground outside many windows across the United States.

On Saturday, the Sony Open’s third round will be on NBC and Peacock at 4 p.m. ET and on Golf Channel at 6 p.m. You can watch the event live on DirecTV Stream (FREE trial and discount) and Fubo TV (FREE trial).

The winner will take $1.566 million out of Hawaii with the $8.7 million prize money.

Denny McCarthy recovered from a slow start on Friday and Patrick Fishburn gained some early momentum, both finishing with a share of the lead in the Sony Open heading into what should be a wild weekend at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

Fishburn began his game with three consecutive birdies on the back nine, then chipped in for a birdie on the fifth hole before finishing with a final birdie to finish at 5-under 65.

Early in his play, McCarthy missed two par putts that were comparatively short by his standards. He was headed for a 66 after making a 25-foot birdie on the fifth hole. On the final hole, McCarthy, who is thought to be among the PGA Tour’s stronger putters, missed an 8-foot birdie effort.

At 10-under 130, they were one shot ahead of Eric Cole (67) and Kensei Hirata (63), who had a chance to tie for the lead at Waialae but missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole.

Sunday is the last round.

Paul Peterson, a 36-year-old rookie who has played on five different tours before being accepted into the PGA Tour this year, was also one shot back. In almost complete darkness, he decided to finish his round on the par-5 ninth hole, two-putting for birdie and a 67.

3-under 137 was the cut. Fifteen players who were on Maui last week for The Sentry, a $20 million tournament that included the FedEx Cup top 50 and 2024 winners, were among those absent from the year’s first full-field event. Austin Eckroat, Chris Kirk, and Billy Horschel were on the list.

Because a Masters invitation is on the line, the top five players entering the weekend have never won on the PGA Tour. However, with 36 holes remaining and 25 players within four shots of the lead, victory is still a long way off, according to the Associated Press.

Sepp Straka of Austria and Zach Johnson, the captain of the United States, were among the two players behind in the last Ryder Cup outside of Rome.

Johnson, who will turn 49 next month, shot 31 on the front nine and holed out for eagle with a 9-iron from the third fairway. His final score was 66.

Matsuyama was at 4 under with a score of 69. He’s still vying to become the third player to win all three Hawaii events in one year. Justin Thomas completed it most recently in 2017.
