UPDATE: On Philadelphia’s first drive of the second half, defensive tackle Jordan Davis of the Eagles was deployed as an additional blocker on kicker Jake Elliott’s attempt for an extra point.

Landover, Maryland.Washington, DCIn the second quarter against the Washington Commanders, the Eagles lost two defensive lineman.

Eagles’ defensive endDefensive tackle Jordan Davis hobbled off the field with what appeared to be a lower-body injury, while Josh Sweat is doubtful to return due to an ankle injury. Davis is standing with his helmet back on the sidelines.

For a variety of reasons, including their strong defensive line performance, Philadelphia’s defense has risen to the top of the league. The Eagles might find it difficult to contain the Commanders’ offense, which is headed by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, without Sweat and Davis.

With just four players playing today, including Sweat, the Eagles are lacking in edge rushers. If Sweat is unable to return, his output will have to be replaced by youngster Jalyx Hunt and second-year edge rusher Nolan Smith.

The third edge rusher in the rotation would be veteran Charles Harris, who joined the Eagles last month.

Davis might come back after the break.

The defensive tackle depth of the Eagles is substantial. If Davis is unable to return, most of the snaps would be handled by Milton Williams and Jalen Carter.

Although they haven’t seen many snaps this season, backup defensive tackles Thomas Booker and Moro Ojomo have occasionally shown promise. Against the Commanders, Ojomo and Booker may need to play more in the second half.

One of the top run stuffers in the NFL is Davis.

To thwart Washington’s rush attack, the Eagles must continue to play strong up front.
