BALTIMORE –The Pittsburgh Steelers only managed 17 points against the Baltimore Ravens, and even with offensive line reinforcements, their run game has had trouble starting the season.
Against the Ravens, they did make one significant personnel adjustment. Najee Harris only played 17 snaps, while Jaylen Warren played 40. Furthermore, Warren greatly out-touched Harris. Both of those things have never happened before, and Warren has now defeated Harris in three straight games.
In his last two games, Harris has only played 31 snaps, and it seems the Steelers are beginning to rely more on Warren, a former Oklahoma State player. Warren had five receptions for 44 yards and 12 carries for 48 yards. Harris gained 42 yards on the ground on nine carries.
In order to capitalize on the strength of both Harris and Warren, the Steelers began to run more gap runs in this game, and both running backs’ efficiency increased dramatically. Head coach Mike Tomlin stated after the game that he would have more to say in his weekly press conference on Sunday because the snap counts were more of a statement of what running backs coach Eddie Faulkner decided.
In any case, Warren appears to have assumed a much larger role in this system and could be the team’s starting running back going forward.
