After defeating Penn State 45-37 in the championship game, Dan Lanning and Oregon took just one Big Ten season to claim the conference’s top spot. On the recruiting trail, they may also be the best.

Bear Alexander, a highly valued transfer defensive tackle who formerly attended USC, announced his commitment to the Ducks on Friday night. During his recruitment, he had visited Penn State.

The Nittany Lions may be sparse up front with Dvon J-Thomas no longer eligible and Zane Durant and Coziah Izzard both awaiting decisions for the upcoming campaign. Alexander, who only ended up at USC through a transfer from Georgia and had four high school transfers, might not have fit in with Penn State’s desired atmosphere. But at a time of need, he would have been an unquestionably gifted player.

Alexander, a four-star recruit straight out of high school, recorded 47 tackles and 1.5 sacks during the Trojans’ 2023 campaign. In order to keep his redshirt and retain further eligibility at his next location, he only participated in three games this season. According to 247Sports, Alexander was the fourth-best defensive lineman in the nation.

David Blay, a transfer from Louisiana Tech who was named to the first team All-Conference USA this season, is a Pennsylvania native who Penn State will now target at the position.
