A distillery and brewery in central Pennsylvania is growing to a sweet spot.
Based in MiddletownA satellite location of Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works is set to open in Hershey at 251 W. Chocolate Ave. The goal is to have the Tattered Flag Distillery Lounge open by the end of the month, ideally before Thanksgiving.
According to Pat Devlin, co-owner of Tattered Flag, “I think Hershey was underserved for a lot of years and now there has been a lot of expansion.”
Adjacent to the Hershey Escape Room, the lounge takes the place of the Hershey Biergarten. According to Devlin, the owners of the Biergarten, who are also friends, asked him to take over the 50-seat taproom.
With its new location, Tattered Flag will be able to sell its goods to more tourists in Hershey. In addition to Hersheypark’s massive expansion for the 2020 season, which includes the addition of the new roller coaster Candymonium, the town has seen the opening of numerous new restaurants.
The brewer/distiller also becomes part of Hershey’s expanding alcohol industry, which includes a few wineries, Troegs Independent Brewing, and Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant.
Additionally, the former Englewood Barn is being converted into a restaurant, large patio, live music venue, and brewery, while Hidden Still Spirits is repurposing a former Hershey Co. plant for its headquarters.
Many of the Biergarten’s staff have been retained by Tattered Flag.
In addition to a wide selection of house-made cocktails, the club will feature Pennsylvania beers, including Tattered Flags. In addition to whiskey and bourbon, the distillery also produces tequila, rum, vodka, moonshine, and gin. Additionally, Tattered Flag offers a range of ready-to-drink cocktails in cans, including margaritas, hurricanes, and Moscow Mules.
Healthy, low-calorie, and low-sugar cocktails—which are becoming more and more popular, according to Devlin—will be among the options. They employ homemade mixers, such as shrubs, which are fruit and vinegar-based concentrated syrups.
A small dishes menu featuring handcrafted tacos, ceviche, hummus, build-your-own burgers, and meatballs will be offered to go with the drinks.
After extensive renovations, Tattered Flag opened three years ago in the former Elks building on South Union Street in Middletown. The proprietors transformed the two-story structure, which had a conference room and three businesses, into a distillery and brewpub.
In Gettysburg, a tap room was added last year.
Wednesday through Sunday is when the Hershey lounge will be open.
