GETTYSBURG You would have to look beyond the final score to notice that the Cumberland Valley and Gettysburg girls wrestling teams had a fiercely contested and thrilling dual meet on Wednesday night.

Four Gettysburg forfeits went to Cumberland Valley, who defeated the Mid-Penn Conference schools 48–32 in the dual meet.

For the forfeits, remove those twenty-four team points. Cumberland Valley prevailed 24–22, winning five of the nine fights that were fought.

“They all received forfeits, so we didn’t have to do much with our hammers,” said Ryan Seagreaves, head coach of Cumberland Valley. After our first event, we had a solid three-meet run, all while traveling. That was incredibly well done by the girls.

Chris Haines, the head coach of Gettysburg, was not happy with the way his squad responded.

Haines stated, “We did give up the forfeits up top.” The truth is that our girls just did not wrestle to the best of their abilities in the matches we had scheduled in order to be competitive and even to win this dual meet. That’s the outcome you’ll receive when you’re satisfied with not giving it your all.

Cumberland Valley, which is currently 3-0 in the dual meet season, will compete in the Findlay Invitational Tournament in Ohio this coming weekend.

Now 7-1, Gettysburg will play at the University of Delaware on Thursday and Friday in the Beast of the East Tournament.

Kendra O. Brien, a senior from Cumberland Valley, began the dual meet by pinning Olivia Koontz in the first session.

I thought Kendra really got us out to a good start, wrestled like a senior that knew she had to deliver and got the fall where we needed her to get that, Seagreaves said.

Up 6-0, the Eagles received forfeits at the 155, 170, 190 and 235-pound weight classes and held a 30-0 edge.

Gettysburg put 10 points on the board as Samantha Cempbell decked Gianni Telfair at 100 and Brooklyn Henry won over Ava Montes via major decision at 107.

Brooklyn Henry is a hammer, Seagreaves said. Ava keeping that to a major was important. Ava finishing that match the way she did, on top, was progress.

Wren Seagreaves at 112 won by decision and Liliana Ling 118 won by fall to open the CV lead on the scoreboard and on the mat.

Wren probably didn t have her best day and found a way to win, Seagreaves said. ” I thought Lili Ling wrestled great at 18. That was a big win for us.

Gettysburg s Myah Coleman recorded a pin over CV s Jordyn Nailor at 124 pounds but the Warriors gave up another six points at 130 when Alyssa Vaughn was disqualified against Brooke Schultz for three technical violations.

CV s Skylar Dougherty narrowly defeated Ella Nevada, 8-7, at 136 pounds after giving up a reversal and four near fall points in the bout s waning seconds.

Gettysburg s defending state champion Zoey Haines, wrestling at 142, capped the evening with a first period pin of Carol Hanns, utilizing a cradle.
