According to a number of rumors, including one that was initially published by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Pennsylvania native and former Greensburg-Salem standout Brendan Marion is completing an agreement to take over as head coach at Sacramento State.

For the previous two seasons, Marion served as UNLV’s offensive coordinator. After UNLV head coach Barry Odom accepted a new position with the Purdue Boilermakers, Dan Mullen was hired; however, Marion did not follow Odom to accept the position.

Marion, 37, will not be UNLV’s coach when the team plays the California Golden Bears in the LA Bowl. Marion, who is credited with inventing the Go-Go Offense, has steadily risen through the ranks of the academic workforce by taking on different positions.

He developed Jordan Addison to help Pitt win an ACC Championship in 2021. The following season, he moved to Texas to serve as their wide receivers coach and coordinator of their passing game, where he assisted in the development of Xavier Worthy.

Just seven miles south of Pittsburgh’s downtown, in Homestead, Pennsylvania, Marion began performing at Steel Valley. But he rose to prominence at Greensburg-Salem High School, where he won letters in football, basketball, and track for four years.

Marion entered the JUCO levels after high school and was awarded a scholarship to play at the University of Tulsa. Marion won the C-USA Newcomer of the Year award in 2007 after amassing 1244 yards and 11 touchdowns. But his chances of playing in the NFL were harmed by an ACL tear late in his final year. His football career ended when he re-tore the same ACL after signing with the Miami Dolphins.

Marion quickly rose to the position of coach after it. He began his high school career in California, but after taking a position as head coach at Waynesboro Area High School in Franklin County, he moved back to Pennsylvania.

Marion created the Go-Go offense in 2014 and guided Waynesboro to their first divisional title and winning season in 22 years. After the season, he would take a quality control position at Arizona State and resign as the team’s head coach.

Following that, Marion was hired as Oklahoma Baptist University’s running backs coach. He then went on to serve as offensive coordinator at Howard and William and Mary. Marion became the University of Hawaii’s wide receivers coach in order to advance to the FBS.

This will be Marion’s first attempt as a college head coach at Sacramento State. Marion will be entrusted with elevating the program as the Hornets aim to elevate themselves to the FBS.
