Wrestling season is the most amazing time of the year.
The annual Perry County Tournament, which featured wrestlers from all three Perry County teams, both new and returning, got things off to a great start.
The lead first moved from team to team in the first match between West Perry and Newport.
Roman Polcha, a returning senior, gave the Buffaloes a tech fall victory in the second session to put them ahead 5-0 and start the game strong.
Evan Shepard of West Perry defeated Chris Imler, a rookie, 4-2 to gain his side a point.
Jackson Rush pinned Jameson Peters at 1:04 to give the Mustangs a 9–5 lead as they continued to fight.
Newport’s Lane At 1:22, Newport followed a pin over Gannon Wilson, and Wright regained the lead.
When Aden Shepard defeated Braxton Kerr by technical fall in the third session, West Perry regained the lead for the last time, making the score 14–11.
At 1:43, Aiden Crockett was pinned by Mustang Adam Yoder.
After Cainan Benner of Newport pinned Hunter Brennan to increase Newport’s lead to 20–17, Tanner Zeigler defeated Trevin Arnold in a technical fall, and Tucker Seidel pinned Colin Barlup in 20 seconds.
Newport, though, persisted.
At 2:29, Christian Rhoads was pinned by Kaj Miller, bringing the final score to 31–23.
With a pin against Justin Still at 3:18, Tyler Morrison then added extra points for the Mustangs.
After Marek Polcha defeated Braydon Lowe by major decision to earn Newport’s final points, Mustang Ridge Casner defeated Michael Nye via technical fall to give West Perry a 42-27 victory.
Susquenita and Newport came next.
This season, the Blackhawks’ ability to fill all of their weight classes was the biggest question, and they succeeded.
The Buffaloes got off to a good start when Imler defeated Cole Robinson 11–4.
Susquenita’s Jaydyn Spencer retaliated by pinning Peters, giving them a 6-3 advantage.
After that, Newport embarked on a winning streak, with victories from Wright, Dalton Kratzzer, Crockett, and Benner bringing the total to 26-6.
To gain additional points, Blackhawk Chase Miller pinned Colin Barlup.
Nevertheless, Miller, M. Polcha, and R. Polcha subsequently posted some pins to raise Newport’s score even further.
The Buffaloes won 50-18 by forfeiting the final game.
Susquenita and West Perry faced off in the last round.
The Mustangs won the county title and the game 62-9 after eight pins from West Perry.
